Pamela Garfield
The natural world has long been the inspiration for my art and my life. In recent years I began creating paintings of the birds that live in my yard. These paintings depict the birds as they hide in the tangle of branches and leaves in which they make their homes. I am especially interested in those moments when a bird notices that I am watching and they return my gaze. Who are they? What do they think of me? Some birds return my gaze, meeting my eyes as a kind of “Hello”. Others are uncomfortable and turn their backs or fly away from the encounter.
In the process of painting, many questions arise about our human depictions of birds throughout time. I think about how the form those depictions has taken reveals how humans regard them. Are they Symbols, or Omens, Decorative Elements, or Specimens? That history does inform my brush strokes. To me, though, they are first and foremost Individuals whose lives and emotions are exciting to explore through art.
About me:
I earned a BFA in painting from Pratt Institute and additionally studied art at Cornell University, Hartford Art School and The Art Students League of NY. Since moving to the Hudson Valley over 30 years ago, my work has been shown in multiple venues in New York City and the Hudson Valley and can be found in private collections throughout the US and Canada.
